Woman Accused of Poisoning Infant for Online Donations Arrested in Queensland

In a harrowing case that has shocked the community, a 34-year-old woman in Queensland, Australia, has been arrested on charges of poisoning a 1-year-old girl over two months. Authorities allege the woman carried out this disturbing act to exploit the child’s suffering for monetary gain through online donations. The arrest followed an extensive investigation by the Morningside Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU), which uncovered chilling details of the alleged abuse.

According to Queensland Police, the woman administered unauthorized prescription and over-the-counter medications to the child between August 6 and October 15, 2024. These actions, which were taken without medical approval, reportedly caused significant distress and pain to the infant. The woman allegedly ignored medical advice, obtaining unauthorized medications through various means, including using prescriptions intended for another individual.

Authorities revealed that the woman carefully concealed her activities until the situation was discovered by medical staff at a Brisbane hospital. Hospital personnel observed signs of harm to the child during her admission, prompting them to report the matter to police. This intervention led to a comprehensive investigation and ultimately the protection of the child.

The allegations extend beyond the physical harm inflicted on the infant. Police claim that the woman filmed videos of the child in distress and posted them online to solicit donations. These videos reportedly portrayed the child’s suffering as a means to garner sympathy and financial support from the public. The exploitation of the child for personal gain has drawn widespread condemnation.

Testing confirmed the presence of unauthorized medicines in the child’s system, further substantiating the allegations. Following this discovery, police arrested the woman on January 7, 2025, at an address in Underwood, Queensland. She now faces a series of serious charges, including five counts of administering poison with intent to harm, three counts of preparation to commit crimes with dangerous substances, one count of torture, one count of creating child exploitation material, and one count of fraud.

Detective Inspector Paul Dalton of the CPIU expressed outrage over the incident, emphasizing the abhorrent nature of the crime. “There is no excuse for harming a child, especially not a one-year-old infant who is reliant on others for care and survival,” he stated. Dalton praised the medical staff for their vigilance in identifying and reporting the harm, which likely prevented further suffering for the child.

The woman is expected to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court, where she will face the full weight of these allegations. The case has drawn attention to the darker side of online fundraising and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals. Many in the community have expressed outrage and disbelief over the deliberate harm inflicted on a defenseless child.

This case also highlights the critical role of medical professionals and law enforcement in protecting vulnerable children. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and to report any signs of abuse or exploitation. Detective Dalton emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “If you see something, say something.”

The investigation remains ongoing, and police are continuing to gather evidence to ensure a thorough prosecution. As the legal proceedings unfold, the focus remains on securing justice for the victim and sending a clear message about the consequences of such heinous acts.

The incident has also sparked a broader conversation about the need for stronger safeguards to prevent the exploitation of children in similar situations. Social media users have commended the swift action of medical staff and law enforcement, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals.

As this case progresses, it serves as a grim reminder of the lengths to which some individuals will go for personal gain. The community’s collective outrage and support for the victim underscore the need for continued efforts to protect children from harm and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
