Our Vision

With eyesight we can see our families, our homes, and our world around us. We can see wonderful things in our environment. We need to do everything we can to protect this sense that we have.

We need to have annual checkups to make sure that our eyes are working as they should. There are machines that can help to check our eyesight and Depisteo makes one of them. They are state of the art and can detect all kinds of eye problems.

This article will help you to learn some interesting information about vision. It will give you some facts that you will find entertaining, as well. You can also do more research to find the information you are seeking.

Vision Information

  1. You Can See a Million Colors – Most people can see a million different colors due to the cone cells in the eyes: https://www.allaboutvision.com/eye-care/eye-anatomy/tetrachromacy/. These cone cells send information to the brain which can perceive different hues. This allows you to see all the differences in colors.
  2. There is a rare condition called tetrachromacy that gives people an extra cone cell. This allows those people to see over one hundred million colors! This would be an amazing trait to have.
  3. Ten Percent of Your Waking Time is Spent Blinking – You blink to clear your eyes from dust and debris, and to keep them lubricated. This explains why we do so much of it. Most people blink between fifteen and twenty times per minute, or between fourteen thousand four hundred and nineteen thousand two hundred times per day.
  4. There are No Blood Vessels in the Quick Healing Cornea – There are no blood vessels in your cornea, which is the clear protective lining of your eye. It receives oxygen from the air instead of blood vessels. The cornea does have nerve endings, though, which is why it hurts so much to scratch your eye.
  5. People with Blue Eyes Share a Common Ancestor – Only about eight to ten percent of people in the world have blue eyes. Blue eyes are the result of a mutation that causes a lack of pigmentation in the irises. Researchers trace this back to a person who lived in Europe between six and ten thousand years ago.
  6. Your Feelings Affect What You See – People with Major Depressive Disorder have said that the world is drab, flat, or gray. See more here. This may be more than a metaphor for these people. Your feelings can affect how you see things.
  7. Researchers have found that people with this disorder experience measurable differences in how their eyes perceive contrast. This would explain why they feel that their world is not as bright as others perceive it to be. People with depression actually see their world differently.

Night Vision Happens Slowly – Feeling that it takes your eyes awhile to adjust to the dark is perfectly normal. It takes up to thirty minutes for your eyes to turn on night sight through a process that is known as dark adaptation. Even when your eyes have adjusted completely, you will mostly see in black and white due to the rod cells that allow us to see in dimly lit areas that aren’t responsible for color sight.

Your Brain Can Fool Your Eyes – Eyesight is only a part of the equation when it comes to eyesight. Although visual information is captured by our eyes, there are thirty different areas of the brain that processes this information. For example, optical illusions are tricking the brain into seeing things that aren’t there or to see things differently.

Your Eye Color is One of a Kind – No one has exactly the same color of eyes that you do. Your eye color is as different as your fingerprints. Even identical twins who share DNA do not have the same eye color.

Perfect Vision is Not 20-20 – People can see an eye chart from twenty feet away are told that they have 20-20 vision. There are people that have even better eyesight than this, for example, many baseball players can see the same thing that others can see at fifteen feet. This means that they have 20-15 eyesight which makes playing ball easier for them.

Color Blindness is Usually a Guy Thing – Some form of color blindness affects about one in ten men. This is when they have trouble distinguishing between red and green tones. Some men also have difficulty telling the difference between blues and yellows.

Conclusion

There are many exciting things that you can learn about vision. Vision is something that you need to be thankful for. Not everyone can say that they have this sense.
