Police Officer Injured in Shooting Incident Near Immigration Detention Center in Texas

In a shocking turn of events late on the night of July 4th, a police officer from Alvarado, Texas, suffered a gunshot wound during a confrontation outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility. As multiple suspects are now in custody, local authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding this brazen attack.

Details of the Incident

According to the Alvarado Police Department, officers were dispatched around 11 p.m. to the 1200 block of Sunflower Lane after receiving a report regarding a suspicious individual near the Prairieland Detention Facility. Upon arrival, officers spotted a person allegedly wielding a firearm.

The situation escalated rapidly when one of the responding officers attempted to engage the individual, leading to an unknown number of suspects opening fire. Tragically, at least one bullet struck an officer in the neck. Thankfully, the officer was promptly airlifted to a hospital in Fort Worth, where they received treatment and were later discharged.

Arrests Made Following the Incident

Shortly after the shooting, police took several suspects into custody while they attempted to flee the scene. As of now, the identities of those arrested have not been disclosed, and an investigation into their motives is ongoing. A federal law enforcement source revealed to CBS News that a total of eight individuals were apprehended, with some reportedly wearing body armor.

Preliminary reports indicate that over a dozen masked individuals dressed in black had arrived at the Prairieland facility earlier that night. Witnesses reported seeing them vandalizing vehicles and tampering with security cameras within the parking lot. Eyewitness accounts also mention the suspects launching fireworks, seemingly in an effort to provoke a response from law enforcement.

Federal Response and Ongoing Investigation

The FBI has been approached for comment regarding the investigation but has thus far declined to provide any information. Meanwhile, the Justice Department issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to monitoring attacks on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) facilities. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche announced, “We are closely monitoring the attacks on DHS detention facilities in Prairieland, TX, and Portland, OR, and are coordinating with our law enforcement partners.”

Blanche underscored the department’s zero-tolerance policy towards assaults on federal officers and property, vowing to prosecute the responsible parties to the fullest extent of the law. This statement refers to a previous incident that took place in mid-June, where three individuals were arrested outside an ICE facility in Portland after clashing with law enforcement.

Public Appeal for Information

Alvarado police are actively seeking additional information regarding the incident. Anyone with details is urged to contact them at 817-790-0919.
