The New Papacy: Robert Prevost Becomes Pope Leo XIV

On May 9, 2025, the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square erupted in cheers of “Viva il Papa” as Robert Francis Prevost was announced as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. At 69 years old, Prevost marks an important milestone as the first American to assume the papacy, though his extensive work as a missionary in Peru endears him to Latin American communities.

A Journey from Chicago to the Vatican

Born in Chicago to Spanish and Franco-Italian immigrant parents in 1955, Leo XIV’s journey within the Church began early, serving as an altar boy before being ordained in 1982. After moving to Peru in 1985, he remained dedicated to spiritual development and community service. His years working as a parish priest and teaching at a seminary in Trujillo earned him respect as a figure deeply committed to marginalized communities.

He reflected on his roots during his inaugural speech, emphasizing the influence of Pope Francis. “We still hear in our ears the weak but always courageous voice of Pope Francis who blessed us,” he noted, calling for unity with God and urging people to progress together.

A Background of Service and Leadership

Pope Leo XIV’s leadership is characterized by significant roles within the Church. Appointed Bishop of Chiclayo by Pope Francis in 2014, he quickly adapted to the responsibilities of church leadership. His expertise as the prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops has connected him with cardinals around the world, leading to his elevation as archbishop in 2023 and subsequent ascension to the cardinalate.

Role Year Appointed
Ordained Priest 1982
Bishop of Chiclayo 2014
Archbishop January 2023
Cardinal 2023

Pope Leo XIV’s Vision for the Church

As he steps into this influential position, many are eager to see how he will build upon the foundation laid by Pope Francis, particularly in relation to social issues. Choosing the name Leo, he aligns himself with a tradition of social justice, echoing the papacies of Leo XIII, who addressed the rights of workers during a time of significant societal change.

Pope Leo XIV’s perspectives on various issues, including the environment and gender representation within the Church, will be closely examined. He has previously indicated a willingness to support local interpretations of Church directives concerning same-sex couples, a stance that remains a point of contention among more conservative factions within the Church.

His commitment to combating climate change, as well as his advocacy for women in leadership roles, signals a progressive approach that seeks to reconcile modern societal challenges with traditional Church teachings.

Challenges Ahead

While his elevation is celebrated in many circles, the new Pope is also confronted with serious criticisms, particularly concerning his handling of sexual abuse cases during his tenure in Peru. Allegations from multiple individuals have cast a shadow over his record, complicating his papacy from the outset. Church officials have strongly defended him against these claims, asserting that due investigations were undertaken and closed due to insufficient evidence.

Pope Leo XIV’s journey is just beginning, and as he embarks on this new chapter, he faces the dual challenge of upholding the Church’s traditions while ushering in necessary reforms. His dual heritage and strong ties to both South American and American communities may play a pivotal role in shaping his leadership as he guides the Catholic Church into the future.
