Hamlin, NY – The New York Army National Guard helicopter crews recently conducted essential fire bucket training at Hamlin State Park, demonstrating their readiness to respond to wildfires and other emergencies. The training exercise, held on July 12th, involved using UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters equipped with specialized fire buckets designed to carry and drop large quantities of water on fires.
Fire bucket training is a critical part of the National Guard’s preparedness program, ensuring that crews are proficient in wildfire suppression techniques. During the exercise, pilots and crew members practiced filling fire buckets from Lake Ontario and accurately dropping the water on designated targets within the park.
Lieutenant Colonel James Gonyo, the officer in charge of the training, emphasized the importance of these exercises. “This training is crucial for maintaining our readiness to support local fire departments and state agencies during wildfire season. Practicing these skills ensures our crews are prepared to respond quickly and effectively to protect lives and property.”
Representatives from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and local fire departments, which collaborate with the National Guard during wildfire incidents, observed the training at Hamlin State Park. The exercise provided an opportunity for interagency coordination and demonstrated the capabilities of the National Guard’s aviation assets.
Fire buckets, also known as Bambi Buckets, are large collapsible containers suspended from helicopters, holding up to 660 gallons of water. These buckets are filled from nearby water sources and then transported to the fire site, where the water is released to extinguish the flames. The precision and skill required to operate these buckets effectively are honed through regular training exercises like the one conducted at Hamlin State Park.
Residents who witnessed the training expressed appreciation for the National Guard’s efforts. “It’s reassuring to see our National Guard preparing for emergencies. Their readiness to assist with wildfire suppression gives us peace of mind,” said one Hamlin resident.
The New York Army National Guard supports state and local emergency services during natural disasters, including wildfires. Their ability to deploy quickly and provide aerial firefighting support is critical in protecting New York’s communities and natural resources.
As wildfire risks continue to grow due to changing climate conditions, the importance of such training exercises cannot be overstated. The National Guard’s ongoing commitment to preparedness ensures they stand ready to assist whenever and wherever needed.
