7 Must-Do Tricks for Using Cycling Clothing Properly

Cycling clothing isn’t just about looking good; it’s about maximizing comfort and performance while riding. Many riders overlook small details that could greatly enhance their experience, from breathability to layering. In this blog, you will explore seven must-do tricks for using cycling clothing and apparel properly.

Use Reflective Gear for Safety6. Wash Your Cycling Apparel Correctly7. Protect Your Skin with UV-protective GearEnhance Your Cycling Journey

1. Choose the Right Layers for Weather Conditions

In cold weather, wear a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away, followed by a thermal layer for warmth, and a waterproof jacket if it’s rainy. When the weather is hot, choose fabrics that are lightweight and breathable to keep yourself cool.

You are able to adjust your clothing as the weather changes, allowing you to add or remove items to maintain your comfort level. Layering allows you to do this. Always check the forecast before your ride to ensure you have the right layers for the day’s conditions.

2. Wear the Right Fit for Maximum Comfort

It is possible for movement to be restricted by clothing that is too tight, while clothing that is too loose may cause chafing or drag.

Ensure that the garments you wear are not only comfortable but also allow for a full range of motion. This is especially important for cycling shorts and jerseys, as they need to be close-fitting without being uncomfortable.

Improved aerodynamics, which in turn makes you more efficient while riding, is another benefit of having a proper fit. Always try on your gear before purchasing to ensure it fits well and feels comfortable.

3. Take Care of Padded Shorts and Chamois

During extended rides, wearing padded shorts with chamois, which is a type of special padding, can help prevent discomfort and chafing. To ensure that the effectiveness of the padding is preserved, it is essential to take care of this padding by gently washing your shorts.

The use of harsh detergents or fabric softeners should be avoided because they have the potential to degrade the material. After washing, air-dry your shorts to preserve the padding shape and structure. Never store wet cycling gear for long periods to prevent odor buildup or damage.

4. Avoid Cotton in Your Cycling Gear

Although it may have a pleasant texture, cotton is not the most suitable material for cycling clothing. Because cotton can absorb sweat and retain it against the skin, it can cause you to feel damp and uncomfortable. Particularly during extended rides, this can cause chafing to occur.

If you want to avoid getting wet, opt for clothing that is made from moisture-wicking materials such as polyester or merino wool. These materials draw sweat away from your skin and help you stay dry.

Your ride will be more comfortable as a result of these fabrics’ ability to dry more quickly and assimilate your body temperature.

5. Use Reflective Gear for Safety

Reflective vests, armbands, or strips on your clothing help make you more visible to drivers. Always wear reflective items if you plan to ride at night or in poor visibility conditions.

Some cycling jackets, jerseys, and helmets come with built-in reflective elements, but you can also add them to your gear. Being visible to others on the road reduces the risk of accidents and keeps you safe while cycling.

6. Wash Your Cycling Apparel Correctly

Always read the care instructions on your clothing before washing. Use a gentle detergent that is designed for activewear and avoid fabric softeners, as they can damage moisture-wicking fabrics.

Wash your clothes in cold water to preserve the fabric and color. Avoid using the dryer for cycling gear, as heat can break down the materials over time. Hang your gear to dry in a well-ventilated area, and never leave it in a damp pile, which can cause odors.

7. Protect Your Skin with UV-protective Gear

UV-protective cycling gear, such as long-sleeve jerseys or arm covers, can help block harmful sun rays. These clothes are made with fabrics that have a built-in UV protection factor (UPF), which keeps you safe from sunburn.

Even if it’s cloudy, UV rays can still cause skin damage, so it’s important to wear protective gear every time you cycle outdoors. Consider applying sunscreen on exposed areas in addition to wearing UV-protective clothing for extra protection.

Enhance Your Cycling Journey

Whether you’re tackling long-distance routes or enjoying a leisurely cycle, the right gear and proper care will enhance your cycling journey. Keep your apparel in top shape, stay prepared for any conditions, and ride with confidence—your cycling experience will thank you!
