How to Choose the Right Moving Company

Moving can feel overwhelming, but picking the right movers doesn’t have to be. There are thousands of moving companies out there, so the key is to ask the right questions before signing any contracts. A little prep now can save you big headaches later.

Every year, around 40 million Americans pick up and relocate, yet most of us spend more time deciding which streaming service to subscribe to than checking out a moving company. Don’t end up as a horror story someone tells at a barbecue. Use these seven key questions to tell the real pros from the shady guys.

Are You Licensed and Insured?

This is the first and most important thing to check. Movers have to be licensed, and the requirements change based on whether you’re moving down the street or across state lines. For cross-country moves, ask for their USDOT number from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Local movers should show you a state-issued license.

Don’t stop there—ask for their insurance certificates, too. A trustworthy mover should have liability insurance and workers’ compensation. If they hesitate or say they don’t need it, keep looking.

What’s Included in Your Estimate?

This is where too many people end up paying more. That low quote might skip key costs like moving stairs, hauling stuff from far-off parking spots, or even the boxes and tape you’ll need. Always ask for an estimate that’s written down and that shows every possible charge, even the small ones.

Be careful with estimates that come over the phone without a moving expert seeing your stuff. A top-notch mover will send someone to your home for a full look, especially with big moves. That way, they can spot any surprises and you can see how the company really works.

How Do You Handle Damaged or Lost Items?

Accidents can happen, even to the best movers. What counts is how they fix the mess. Ask them how you file a claim, what papers you’ll need, and how soon they respond. Most good companies will cover your stuff at around 60 cents a pound, but for valuable items, you might want more coverage.

Get their damage policy in writing and make sure you know when you need to file a claim. If the company won’t explain the process or brushes off your worries, that’s a big warning sign.

Can You Provide Recent References?

Don’t just ask for references— call the people listed. Recent clients can tell you about the movers’ punctuality, how they handle surprises, and the overall level of professionalism. If a company won’t share references from the past year or two, or if they hand you names from five years ago, you should be concerned.

Online reviews are useful, but a quick phone chat with a current customer can uncover details that a rating or written comment won’t cover.

What’s Your Policy on Delays and Schedule Changes?

Life happens, and sometimes moves get delayed due to weather, traffic, or other circumstances. Understanding your mover’s plan for these surprises can save you a lot of stress.

Ask how they will communicate if a delay happens and whether you’ll pay extra if a rescheduled date comes up. Reputable movers will have a written policy and will keep you in the loop from the first call to the last box.

What Experience Do You Have With Moves?

Every move is a different beast, and the right moving company knows how to wrestle yours. Shuffling a studio apartment a few blocks is miles away from moving a four-bedroom house to another state, and pianos, fine art, and antiques don’t play nice with a one-size-fits-all approach.

What Payment Methods Do You Accept and When Is Payment Due?

A reputable mover will present a variety of payment options and will refrain from demanding a substantial deposit. If a company requests a large cash deposit or insists on full payment before loading your items, consider that a serious warning sign.

The Value of Hiring Professional Moving Companies

When you tally up moving expenses, don’t stop at the number on the quote. Bringing in a moving crew streamlines your life, secures your possessions, and preserves your sanity. Moving professionals show up with the right gear, the right know-how, and the right insurance—assets a rented van and a few buddies can’t match.

A solid moving company knows how to cradle Grandma’s china cabinet and maneuver a full-size fridge down a winding hall. They’re up to speed on local regulations, have already chatted with your building’s management, and have devised the shortcuts that turn narrow stairwells and full street parking into non-issues. That’s why the premium can feel small against the payoff in worry-free delivery.

Making Your Final Decision

Take a quiet afternoon to sample multiple estimates. Nail every promise in black and white, and trust your instincts on the personal side. A few extra calls and emails today can convert a moving horror show into an effortless arrival at your next front door.

Your possessions carry the stories and the dollars that can’t be swapped out. They merit a crew that respects them as much as you do.
