Fake Delivery Drivers Assault Children in Home Invasion

Aurora, Colorado – In a shocking and disturbing incident, three armed robbers posing as delivery drivers forced their way into a Colorado family’s home, attacking two children and their babysitter. The brazen home invasion, captured on a Ring doorbell camera, has raised concerns about a potential new trend in criminal tactics.

On the evening of June 12, a quiet neighborhood near Denver became the scene of a terrifying crime. At around 8:30 p.m., a man dressed in a bright orange vest and carrying a box approached the front door of a home in Aurora, Colorado. The unsuspecting residents inside, believing him to be a legitimate delivery driver, opened the door slightly. The man instantly entered, shouting in Spanish to his accomplices, who quickly joined him.

The intruders overpowered the babysitter, a 14-year-old girl, and a six-year-old boy. The teenage girl was inappropriately touched during the brief but violent encounter, while the young boy and the babysitter were shoved to the ground. The robbers made off with jewelry and cash, leaving the children traumatized.

The children’s parents, who were not home then, witnessed the ordeal through their Ring doorbell camera. Unable to intervene physically, they immediately called the police. “It’s every parent’s worst nightmare,” the children’s mother said. “Seeing your children in danger and being unable to help is terrifying.”

Retired NYPD Sgt. Joseph Giacalone, now a John Jay College of Criminal Justice professor, described the incident as “an old crime with a new twist.” He explained that criminals have historically posed as utility workers to gain access to homes. However, as utility workers now wear distinct uniforms and carry identification cards, this tactic has become less effective.

“These guys are always looking for a new way to get into your house,” Giacalone said. “The use of delivery disguises is particularly concerning because it’s common for people to receive packages regularly, making it easier for criminals to exploit this.”

The Aurora incident is part of a disturbing trend of home invasions involving fake delivery drivers. Last year in Indiana, a burglar posing as a DoorDash driver was shot and killed by a homeowner during an attempted robbery. In another case, armed robbers in New York City posed as deliverymen and stole $70,000 in valuables, binding their victims with duct tape.

In Connecticut, a man wearing an orange vest and carrying a manila envelope attempted to force his way into a home with a gun, but the homeowner managed to shove him out and secure the door.

Following the incident in Aurora, the local police department has urged residents to be cautious when opening their doors to strangers. Aurora Police Chief Sean Connolly emphasized the importance of verifying the identity of anyone claiming to be a delivery person. “If someone knocks on your door and says you need to sign for a package, request to see their ID through a window, peephole, or door camera,” he advised.

The Aurora Police Department and other law enforcement agencies are investigating whether this incident is part of a larger pattern of crimes. They are also working to identify and apprehend the suspects involved in the attack.

The emotional toll on the victims has been significant. The mother of the assaulted children expressed deep concern about the long-term effects on her son and daughter. “My son is having nightmares and is afraid to be alone,” she said. “My daughter feels violated and unsafe in her own home.”

The family has sought counseling for their children and is considering additional security measures to protect their home. “We’re looking into getting more cameras and possibly a security system,” the mother added. “We want to make sure this never happens again.”

This alarming new trend in home invasions has broader implications for community safety and law enforcement practices. Communities must stay vigilant and informed as criminals adapt and find new ways to exploit unsuspecting victims.

Law enforcement agencies nationwide are now on high alert, sharing information and strategies to combat this growing threat. Increased community awareness and cooperation are key components in preventing these crimes and ensuring the safety of all residents.

As law enforcement continues to investigate, the Aurora community is rallying to support the victims and raise awareness about this alarming trend. Neighborhood watch programs are being reinforced, and community meetings are being held to discuss safety measures.

“This incident has been a wake-up call for all of us,” said a resident. “We need to stay vigilant and look out for each other.”

The community’s response highlights the importance of solidarity and proactive measures in the face of emerging threats. Residents can help deter criminal activities and create a safer environment by working together and supporting one another.

The harrowing home invasion in Aurora underscores the need for heightened awareness and precaution in today’s world. Communities must stay informed and prepared as criminals adopt new methods to exploit unsuspecting victims. By taking proactive measures and supporting one another, residents can help ensure their safety and prevent such terrifying incidents from occurring in the future.
