Officer Killed, Five Injured in Pennsylvania Hospital Shooting

A tragic shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in West Manchester Township, Pennsylvania, claimed the life of a police officer and left five others injured on Saturday morning. The suspect, 42-year-old Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, entered the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) armed with a semi-automatic handgun and zip ties, targeting medical staff in a shocking act of violence.

Authorities report that Archangel-Ortiz was grief-stricken over the recent death of a family member who had been in the hospital’s ICU. Frustration over what he perceived as inadequate care led him to storm the unit, taking several hospital staff members hostage before opening fire.

During the standoff, he shot a hospital doctor, nurse, and custodian, all of whom survived and are in stable condition. Three police officers were also struck by gunfire, with West York Borough police officer Andrew Duarte tragically succumbing to his injuries. The two other officers remain hospitalized in stable condition.

Law enforcement from multiple agencies, including the Pennsylvania State Police and York County Quick Response Team, responded swiftly to the crisis. Negotiators attempted to de-escalate the situation, urging Archangel Ortiz to surrender. However, the situation took a deadly turn when he emerged from the ICU holding a hospital staff member at gunpoint, her hands bound by zip ties.

With no other options, officers opened fire, fatally shooting the suspect.

“The officers were left with no recourse,” York County District Attorney Tim Barker stated. “Their actions prevented further loss of life and ensured the safety of those still inside.”

Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage and witness accounts, concluding that the officers acted lawfully in using deadly force.

The loss of Officer Duarte has sent shockwaves through the community. Known for his dedication and commitment to serving the people of West York Borough, Duarte’s passing is being mourned by fellow officers and residents alike.

“This is a huge loss to our community,” said District Attorney Barker. “Officer Duarte gave his life protecting others.”

A memorial has been set up outside the West York Borough Police Department, where flowers and messages of support continue to grow. Officials have announced plans for a public vigil and a fundraiser to support his family.

Authorities believe Archangel Ortiz acted alone in the attack. He had reportedly struggled to accept the death of a terminally ill family member who had passed away in the ICU just days before the shooting. Officials are investigating whether he had prior violent tendencies or had made complaints about the hospital’s care.

Medical professionals at UPMC Memorial expressed their sorrow over the tragic events. “We are heartbroken by what has taken place within our walls,” a hospital spokesperson said. “Our priority remains the well-being of our staff, patients, and the community.”

Following the attack, UPMC Memorial has implemented heightened security measures to ensure the safety of hospital personnel and patients. Law enforcement officials continue to assess the incident and provide updates as necessary.

As the investigation continues, York County residents stand together in mourning, remembering the sacrifices made by those who risk their lives to protect the community. The events of that morning serve as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by first responders and the enduring strength of those they serve.
