Jimmy Carter’s Legacy Honored by Grandson Jason Carter

The passing of Jimmy Carter, former U.S. president, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and founder of The Carter Center, has left a profound void in the hearts of many around the world. At age 100, Carter’s death on December 29, 2023, marked the end of an era defined by his unwavering commitment to public service, global peace, and humanitarian efforts. For his family, however, the loss is deeply personal.

Jason Carter, Carter’s grandson, shared poignant memories during a live interview on “Good Morning America” just days after his grandfather’s death. Speaking of the man known globally for his leadership, Jason emphasized a more intimate connection. He recalled, “He was my grandfather first and foremost. I have memories like anyone else, of him taking me fishing or sitting down to talk about life.” For Jason, Carter was not only a global icon but also a loving mentor whose wisdom shaped his life.

Reflecting on one pivotal moment, Jason recounted seeking his grandfather’s advice after college. “I asked, ‘What would you do if you were me?’ He told me to go to Africa and join the Peace Corps, and that’s exactly what I did,” he said. This personal interaction epitomized Jimmy Carter’s dedication to service, a value he instilled in his family.

Jimmy Carter’s legacy extends far beyond his presidency. He was a man deeply rooted in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, where he lived a life of simplicity and service. Despite spending eight years in the political spotlight, Carter devoted the majority of his life to humanitarian work through The Carter Center, which he co-founded with his wife, Rosalynn. Their partnership, which lasted 77 years until Rosalynn’s death on November 19, 2023, was celebrated as a testament to enduring love and mutual respect.

Jason described his grandparents’ marriage as “one of the great American love stories.” Their relationship, grounded in shared values and unwavering support, served as a foundation for their work and family life. A photograph of the couple sharing a kiss during Carter’s presidency encapsulates their bond, reflecting their faith, love, and commitment to each other and their principles.

Jimmy Carter leaves behind four children and around two dozen grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family has taken solace in their annual traditions, such as New Year’s gatherings, where they would toast the future with champagne. These cherished memories, Jason said, remind them of the joy and unity Carter fostered within his family.

As the Carter family moves forward, they are focused on continuing Jimmy Carter’s work through The Carter Center. The organization, central to his legacy, operates globally to resolve conflicts, advance democracy, and combat diseases. Jason, who serves as chair of the board, highlighted the center’s far-reaching impact, with thousands of employees working in countries such as Ethiopia, Sudan, and Bangladesh. “This organization is his life’s work,” Jason noted. “It’s about making the greatest impact for the most people.”

Jimmy Carter’s ability to remain authentic throughout his political career and beyond serves as an inspiration to many, including Jason. During his political campaign for Georgia governor in 2014, Jason sought to embody the integrity and steadfastness his grandfather demonstrated. “He proved you can reach the highest levels of politics without compromising who you are,” Jason said. “That was always our guiding principle.”

As the Carter family prepares to bid farewell to their patriarch at his funeral on January 9, Jason Carter is set to deliver a eulogy honoring his grandfather’s remarkable life. For the family, Jimmy Carter’s legacy is one of hope, service, and unwavering faith in the power of kindness and action.

Jimmy Carter’s life was a beacon of what it means to lead with purpose and conviction. As the world remembers him as a leader, peacemaker, and humanitarian, his family celebrates the personal connection they shared with a man who never wavered in his commitment to making the world a better place.
