Air Force Marathon In-Person Events Cancelled Due to Safety Concerns

Dayton, OH—In a recent announcement, the Air Force Marathon organizers have decided to cancel all in-person events for this year’s marathon due to ongoing safety concerns. The decision was made to prioritize the health and well-being of participants, volunteers, and spectators.

The Air Force Marathon, traditionally held at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, is a significant event attracting thousands of runners from across the country and worldwide. The marathon includes various races, such as the full marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K, and several celebratory events and activities.

Organizers expressed their disappointment in canceling the marathon’s in-person component but emphasized that it was a necessary step. “The safety of our runners, volunteers, and spectators is our top priority. Given the current circumstances, we believe canceling the in-person events is the best course of action,” said the Marathon Director Brandon Hough.

Participants who had registered for the in-person races will have several options. They can transfer their registration to the virtual race, defer their entry to the 2022 event, or request a full refund. The virtual race option allows runners to complete their race at a location and time, and they will still receive their race medals and shirts by mail.

Despite the physical event’s cancellation, the spirit of the Air Force Marathon will continue. Virtual race participants are encouraged to share their race experiences and photos on social media, fostering a sense of community and celebration even from a distance.

The decision to cancel the in-person events was not taken lightly, as the Air Force Marathon is not just a race but a celebration of fitness, resilience, and the Air Force community. Organizers remain hopeful for a return to the traditional format next year and look forward to welcoming back runners and supporters to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 2022.
