Tragic Incident Claims Life of Teen on Long Island Parkway

In a heartbreaking incident, a 15-year-old boy was fatally struck by a vehicle while walking along the Southern State Parkway in Valley Stream, New York. The victim, identified as Christopher Williams, had reportedly left The Martin De Porres School for Exceptional Children without supervision, according to his family.

The tragic event occurred on September 4, 2025, shortly after Williams departed from school, located approximately a half-mile from the scene of the accident. New York State Police responded to the site, where Williams was subsequently transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Family’s Heartbreak

Williams’ family from St. Albans, Queens, expressed their devastation over the loss of their son, labeling it an incomprehensible tragedy. “On what should have been a normal school day, our world was shattered forever. The school failed him, and now our family is left with an unimaginable loss,” Williams’ brother shared in a message to CBS News New York.

According to reports, the school had contacted Williams’ mother before police arrived to inform the family about the accident. “They called me to ask where Christopher was. I didn’t even know he was gone,” she stated.

Community Response

In the wake of this tragic event, The Martin De Porres School released a public statement mourning the loss of one of its students. They expressed their condolences to the family and confirmed that counseling services were being made available for both students and staff. The statement emphasized the profound sense of grief within the community.

“We ask for privacy so our school community can grieve and begin the healing process,” the statement read. Additionally, a fundraising initiative has begun to assist with funeral expenses for the family of the deceased.

Investigation and Policy Review

In acknowledgment of the incident, Joe Trainor, the executive director of The Martin De Porres School, announced that a comprehensive review of the school’s safety policies and procedures is underway. The school’s mission focuses on providing education to children with emotional and behavioral challenges, ensuring their safety is paramount.

“We take this incident very seriously and have already initiated a top-down review of our internal procedures and policies,” Trainor stated. Meanwhile, the New York State Police are conducting an investigation to gather further details about the accident.

Concerns from Parents

The tragic event has left parents within the school community shaken. Many are calling for immediate answers regarding how Williams was able to exit the school unsupervised. Concerns have been raised regarding the safety protocols in place for students with special needs.

  • Tiaba Lubin: “The fact that the child even got that far is really scary. Where is the security at the school and the teachers?”
  • Marie Senville: “Very unsafe. I think the school would have to be responsible. It doesn’t make sense for a child with special needs to get out of the school.”

Similar Incidents

Just the day before Williams’ tragic loss, another alarming situation unfolded when a kindergartener with autism managed to leave Riverside Elementary School in Rockville Centre. The 5-year-old climbed a fence and walked home alone. It was reported that the school was conducting a review of their safety protocols in light of this incident as well.

The situation underscores a critical need for schools to evaluate and enhance their security measures to ensure the safety of all students.
