Jay Cutler Sentenced to Jail for DUI Charges

Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler, known for his tenure with the Chicago Bears, has recently faced legal consequences for a driving under the influence (DUI) incident that occurred in Tennessee last year. Following a plea deal, Cutler has been sentenced to serve four days in jail.

Details of the Incident

Cutler’s run-in with the law took place in October 2024 when he rear-ended another vehicle in Franklin, Tennessee, a city located near Nashville. According to police reports, the former football star attempted to flee the scene after the collision. Reports indicate he even offered the other driver $2,000 to avoid reporting the incident.

When law enforcement arrived, they noted the smell of alcohol and observed that Cutler’s eyes appeared “bloodshot,” “glassy,” and “dilated.” Initially denying any alcohol consumption, Cutler later confessed to having drinks after being challenged by the officers, but he declined to participate in a field sobriety test.

Legal Proceedings

As part of the arrest process, Cutler was taken to a nearby hospital, where a blood sample was obtained under a search warrant. At the time of his arrest, authorities found two firearms in his vehicle, including one that was loaded.

On August 25, 2025, Cutler officially entered a guilty plea to DUI charges and was subsequently sentenced. In addition to the jail time, he was ordered to pay a fine of $350. The prosecution dropped the weapon-related charge as part of the plea agreement, but Cutler must surrender the handgun involved in the incident.

Consequences of the Ruling

Along with his brief incarceration, Cutler is now subject to probation for one year. As part of the probationary measures, he is required to complete a DUI safety course and will be subjected to random drug testing during this period. Additionally, his driver’s license has been revoked in the state of Tennessee.

Career Background

Cutler, who made a name for himself at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft as the 11th overall selection. He enjoyed a successful career, highlighted by a Pro Bowl selection in 2008 during his time with the Broncos. After three seasons in Denver, he became a key player for the Chicago Bears, ultimately setting several franchise records for passing. Cutler concluded his NFL career with a single season at the Miami Dolphins before retiring in 2017.
