Upcoming Films to Watch This June

As the summer season heats up, cinema enthusiasts have plenty to look forward to in June. From heartfelt romantic comedies to thrilling horror sequels, here are eight must-see films set to hit theaters and streaming platforms this month.

1. Materialists

Release Date: June 13 in the US, Canada, India, Poland, and Turkey

Celine Song explores the nature of love in her latest project, Materialists. Following her acclaimed debut, Past Lives, this romantic comedy stars Dakota Johnson as a chameleon-like New York matchmaker who prioritizes wealth and appearance for her clients. However, she finds herself torn between a financially-strapped ex (Chris Evans) and a wealthy new admirer (Pedro Pascal). Song articulates a compelling question: what could be more significant than the experience of love?

2. The Life of Chuck

Release Date: June 6 in the US, June 11 in France

In this stirring adaptation of Stephen King’s work, The Life of Chuck begins with an apocalyptic perspective, as former spouses (Chiwetel Ejiofor and Karen Gillan) witness the universe’s demise alongside the legacy of a curious man named Charles “Chuck” Krantz (Tom Hiddleston). Critics praise the film’s ability to blend humor and heartbreak into a mesmerizing experience.

3. M3GAN 2.0

Release Date: June 27 internationally

After the viral success of its predecessor, M3GAN 2.0 returns with the beloved AI doll (voiced by Jenna Davis) facing off against a more sinister android. Directed by Gerard Johnstone, this sequel aims to maintain the charm of the original while introducing fresh dynamics in the robotic confrontation.

4. Elio

Release Date: June 18, 19, 20 internationally

Pixar’s new animated offering, Elio, tells the story of a shy 11-year-old boy who is mistaken for Earth’s leader by extraterrestrial beings. The film hopes to replicate the emotional weight of classics like E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, appealing to audiences on both a comedic and heartfelt level.

5. 28 Years Later

Release Date: June 18, 19, 20 internationally

Reviving a favorite horror narrative, 28 Years Later reunites director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland. The storyline picks up where the previous films left off, with survivors in Britain grappling against a fearsome virus. With hints of intense horror and groundbreaking twists, this installment promises to be a thrilling addition to the franchise.

6. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina

Release Date: June 4 to 7 internationally

A new chapter in the John Wick universe, Ballerina features Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, a young assassin seeking vengeance. The film incorporates familiar faces such as Keanu Reeves and Ian McShane while focusing on Eve’s unique journey separate from Wick’s storyline.

7. Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore

Release Date: June 20 in the US

This intimate documentary dives into Marlee Matlin’s extraordinary life, chronicling her triumphs and struggles as the first deaf actress to win an Oscar. Directed by Shoshannah Stern, it showcases the unfiltered essence of Matlin’s journey through personal hardships and advocacy.

8. Happy Gilmore 2

Release Date: June 25 on Netflix internationally

Nearly three decades after the original, Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore is back with a sequel featuring familiar faces and new stars like Travis Kelce. Retaining the comedic spirit of the first film, this sequel is set to cater to its long-time fans while introducing fresh humor.
