This comprehensive index does not crown a single “happiest” city but highlights a collection of 31 Gold Cities that demonstrate particularly strong results across these metrics.
To delve deeper into what constitutes a “happy city,” we interviewed residents from the top five ranked cities, offering insight into the policies and features that contribute to their well-being.
1. Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen tops the list, boasting exceptional scores in both the Environment and Economy categories. Green spaces, sustainability efforts, and effective waste management contribute to a vibrant urban atmosphere, enriched by active cultural engagement.
Mari-Anne Daura, a longtime resident, reflects on the city’s dynamic cultural scene, where frequent free events—like the Copenhagen Light Festival and Copenhagen Cooking—offer residents diverse experiences. “There’s always something to do and something new to experience,” Daura shares.
Many residents also enjoy the city’s emphasis on cycling. “Biking is a way of life here,” says Aaron Wertheimer. “The infrastructure supports safe commuting, making the city easily navigable for cyclists.”
2. Zurich, Switzerland
With its reputation for organization and safety, Zurich secures the second spot in the index. It excels in the Governance and Citizens categories, promoting transparent policies and civic engagement.
Local resident Raquel Matos Gonçalves highlights the city’s family-friendly environment, stating, “Zurich is exceptionally clean and organized, creating a stress-free atmosphere.” The strict adherence to regulations allows for a convivial and orderly daily life, contributing significantly to its residents’ happiness.
Visitors are encouraged to explore the Kunsthaus Zürich, one of the country’s largest art museums. Amelie Guiot mentions, “On sunny days, everyone gathers at the lakeside badis, enjoying public bathing in a uniquely Swiss manner.”
3. Singapore

4. Aarhus, Denmark
Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city, provides a balance between urban life and a small-community feel, making it distinctly livable. The city shines in categories like Citizens and Health, facilitating a nurturing environment for its residents.
Carla Niña Pornelos notes, “Joy is intricately woven into daily life here, facilitated by community events and sustainable practices.” The existence of integrated bike paths and green spaces further enriches Aarhus’s livability.
As Mathias Steen suggests, taking a stroll along the Infinite Bridge can help visitors appreciate the city’s artistic and natural blend. “It’s a beautifully serene moment that encapsulates Aarhus,” he describes.
5. Antwerp, Belgium
Ranked fifth, Antwerp showcases a compact and vibrant lifestyle that thrives on effective governance and public service quality. Residents appreciate their reliable transportation and high emphasis on environmental factors.
Grace Carter, who moved from Brussels, finds the city’s blend of culture and leisure to be uniquely rewarding. “Antwerp feels manageable and welcoming,” she states. “Efficient policies foster an environment where life can be enjoyed, not just endured.”
